What is it?
A priest anoints someone who is seriously ill, frail with age, or in danger of death, praying for healing, for strength, and for the forgiveness of sins.
Who is it for?
Anyone baptised who is seriously ill or growing frail, at home, in hospital, or here in the church. It may be received more than once.
When is it celebrated?
At any hour of the day or night. Do not wait until the last moment.
How far in advance?
None. Call as soon as you know.
Preparation
None. If the person is able, the priest will hear their confession and bring Holy Communion as well.
Who should I contact?
Call the emergency number at any hour: it reaches a priest, not the office.
What happens next?
A priest comes to the house, the hospital or the ward. Tell the office afterwards if the family would like the parish to pray for them at Mass.
